Indian Government officials reportedly switched to Sandes, a desi WhatsApp alternative due to privacy concerns

Sandes, a desi alternative to WhatsApp for government officials.

A report on Monday said that some government officials are using a desi Whatsapp alternative named Sandes. Previous Indian Government confirmed that they are working on a Whatsapp-chat-like messaging service and it seems the platform is ready and is under testing phase which is initially done by the ministry officials.

A report from Business Standard says that some ministries have already started using Government Instant Messaging System (GIMS). However, now it is clear that it will be known by name Sandes.

The gims.gov.in page does give away the name confirming. It also shows some ways to log-in including sign-in LDAP, sign-in with Sandes OTP, and Sandes web. On tapping on any of the options, the page shows a message that reads, "This authentication method is applicable for authorized government officials."

The app has been developed by the National Informatics Centre. It provides both voice and chat support just like otger messaging service platforms.
